Communities Mobilizing for Change On Alcohol

"Communtities Mobilizing for Change On Alcohol" (CMCA), designated a Model Program by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention of the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration, is currently being implemented throughout Onondaga County by this coalition.  CMCA, a research-based program created by the Alcohol Epidemiology Program of the University of Minnesota, addresses the environmental factors related to underage drinking, including commercial access, social access, community institutions, advertising, and policies.
Community Forums on Underage Drinking
(Previously called Town Hall Meetings)

We will bring the forum to you!
A collaborative effort between multiple community based prevention agencies- the Syracuse/Onondaga Drug-Free Coalition, Prevention Network, Alcohol Advertising Reform Initiative, and Seven Valleys Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse-will present a 90 minute program geared to adults or any youth care-taker on the issues concerning Underage Drinking.  This presentation will consist of 3 components: 1) Alcohol Advertising & Marketing towards Teens, 2) the most recent research on Adolescent Brain Development and Alcohol's Effect on the Teen Brain, and 3) Tools for Parents/Youth care-takers on how to be in the "know" and what to say to your child to prevent youth alcohol use and how to intervene.  This informative session is NOT to be missed!
The only thing you need to do is:
gather a group of 10 or more adults, set a date/time and invite us to be there.
Let's talk about underage drinking.
Call us at 479-1140 to request a presentation!

Alcoholic Energy Drinks- A Dangerous Mix

Do you know what your kid is drinking?
If you think it's just an Energy Drink, think again!

What is an Alcoholic Energy Drink?
It's a combination of alcohol, sweeteners, caffeine, and other dubious "energy" ingredients such as taurine, ginseng, etc.

Brands:
Tilt, Bud Extra, Sparks, Evil Eye, Liquid Charge, Rockstar 21

Facts:
* One 16 ounce of Sparks has up to a 7 % alcohol content and 214
mg of caffeine (equal to 4 cans of Mountain Dew or 6 cans of
  Pepsi).

* High caffeine content masks the alcohol's intoxicating effects,
thereby providing a longer window of time for risk taking behaviors.

* A study of 4,000 North Carolina college students found that mixing
alcohol and energy drinks was associated with higher amounts of
drinking, more drunkenness, and becoming hurt/injured and
causing hurt/injury (Mary Clair O'Brien, researcher at
  Wake Forest).

Alcohol + Caffeine = "wide awake drunk."
