Alcoholic Energy Drinks- A Dangerous Mix
Do you know what your kid is drinking?
If you think it's just an Energy Drink, think again!
What is an Alcoholic Energy Drink?
It's a combination of alcohol, sweeteners, caffeine, and other dubious "energy"
ingredients such as taurine, ginseng, etc.
Brands:
Tilt, Bud Extra, Sparks, Evil Eye, Liquid Charge, Rockstar 21
Facts:
* One 16 ounce of Sparks has up to a 7 % alcohol content
and 214
mg of caffeine (equal to 4 cans of Mountain Dew or 6 cans of
Pepsi).
* High caffeine content masks the alcohol's intoxicating
effects,
thereby providing a longer window of time for risk taking behaviors.
* A study of 4,000 North Carolina college students
found that mixing
alcohol and energy drinks was associated with higher amounts of
drinking, more drunkenness, and becoming hurt/injured and
causing hurt/injury (Mary Clair O'Brien, researcher at
Wake Forest).
Alcohol + Caffeine
= "wide awake drunk."
